DUO ROLLER & SCREEN ROLLER BLINDS

Duo Roller and Screen roller blinds go hand in hand, so here we will discuss both.

WHAT IS A DUO ROLLER BLIND?

A duo roller blind is actually two roller blinds, put into one aperture.  There are effectively two ways of doing this.

Dedicated Duo Roller

Modern roller blinds are housed in aluminium cassette boxes and there is an adaption to the box that allows two blinds to sit, one above the other.

Hide & Seek

The other method is to hide a standard roller blind, that does not have a cassette box, behind one that does.

WHY WOULD YOU NEED A DUO ROLLER BLIND?

A duo roller blind will typically be used where we are using a roller material blind that only works during daytime hours, such as a voile or screen fabric.

A voile or screen material are examples of materials that allow you to see out in the daytime but prevent people seeing in.

However, all screen and voile materials reverse in functionality at night time, once you have artificial lights on in your home.  For some, this would not be an issue, for others we need to be able to cover the window with something that isn’t transparent, at night.  Hence the duo roller!

WHAT IS A SCREEN ROLLER BLIND?

A screen material, is a PVC/Polyester material, that is incredibly durable (probably the most durable material available for roller blinds), that acts to “screen” harsh sunlight.  The fabric is broadly, transparent, and reacts to the intensity of the sun.  The more direct sun, the less you will see (you’ve be dazzled by the glare if it does not react), the less direct the sun, the more you can see out.

A by-product of how the material was designed, is the fact that it is a one way fabric during daylight hours.  You can see out; no one can see in!

During night hours, a screen material, on the inside, will feel solid.  You won’t be able to see out.  However, from outside looking in, if there are lights on, it would be possible to see into the room through the blind.

We come across a mix of situations where for some, not being overlooked, this is not of concern.  In which case, a duo roller blind is not needed, just the screen roller blind.  For others, we need to deal with the night time and so that is where we can revert to making the blind a duo roller.

CAN A SCREEN ROLLER BECOME A DUO ROLLER LATER IN LIFE?

If you have a screen roller blind and need us to add a night blind, this is easy to do.  Conversely, if you have a traditional roller fabric that is solid and need a day option installed, it is equally as easy.

SCREEN ROLLERS ARE LOW MAINTENANCE - EASY TO CLEAN AND INCREDIBLY DURABLE

  • Screen rollers are made up of 75% PVC, they are incredibly dense and durable and difficuilt to crease
  • They are very easy to clean - just wipe them !

VOILES

A voile roller material, whilst not high performing against sun, achieves total daytime privacy as just like a net curtain, a voile is only transparent, inside looking out.  Think of it as a rolling net curtain.

Voiles, just like net curtains, are not high performing against intense sun glare, so that is something to keep in mind.

Voiles can be easier to see out of during the daytime hours and are better suited to darker elevations e.g. North or East facing.

Unlike screen fabric which can wiped clean, voiles are more difficult to keep clean.

In the four pictures shown, 4 blinds are neatly concealed when they are all up;  blinds are present for daytime use to provide day privacy and incredible protection from the sun; night blinds are also in place to be pulled down to close everything down at night.

DUO ROLLER BLINDS

In the pictures below, screen roller blinds have been installed across a huge 6 of bi folding doors.  These were part of an annex, where the customer wished to have privacy during daylight hours.

Screen Roller Blinds

Hi performing sun screening with a good view out!

During the daytime, screen blinds are one way, you can see out, no one can see in

Exceptional performance.  South facing bay window in full sun, utilising screen roller blinds in white.  In this picture, you're view out is restricted.

Ordinarily, screen blinds are easy to see out; under intense sunlight, they auotmatically react to screening the sun, so you're not blinded by the glare.  By lifting the blind, you can visibly see how much protection there is from glare.

Compare the performance - a white screen covering cover a door when not under intense sunlight

The exact same white screen fabric, in extreme sun - if you could see through it, you would be blinded by the glare!  The material will just react to the intensity of the sun, becoming more transparent as the glare reduces.
