We manufacture our own Wood and Faux Wood Venetian Blinds, offering two slat sizes in each: 35mm and 50mm.
This is the most frequently asked question. There are some subtle differences that few blind companies actually explain, but we’ll explain them here.
Our genuine wood Venetians are made from Basswood, which is part of a renewable program. For every tree cut down, another tree must be planted to replace it. Basswood is a high-quality wood that can withstand the extreme temperature fluctuations in the UK.
Faux wood uses PVC to create the wood-look slats. These slats are less stable than wood, so more ladder strings are required across any given width to support the blind’s structure.
Both options allow you to use tapes instead of ladder strings, but remember that Faux wood will have significantly more tapes for any given width.
Better quality raise & lower mechanism
Smoother tilt operation
10 Year Warranty
Few ladder strings as the product is more stable
Not ideal in wet rooms (a wet room being a fully tiled room; they will be fine for ordinary bathrooms and en suites so long as they are not physically getting wet)
Basic raise & lower mechanism
Basic tilt mechanism
3 Year Warranty
More ladder strings to offer structural support as needed
Ideal for wet rooms
Choosing between these two sizes has some significant implications. The market is predominantly dominated by the sale of 50mm slats.
The drop of your window and slat size determines the number of slats required from top to bottom. Larger slat sizes (e.g., 50mm) necessitate fewer slats.
The number of slats influences several factors, including:
Natural Light: Both 35mm and 50mm slats have the same thickness. Therefore, using the 50mm option with fewer slats restricts less light into your room.
Better Light Exclusion: Wood or faux wood slats are flat, allowing light to leak slightly when shut. The more slats you have, the greater the opportunity for light leaks. The 50mm option offers better light exclusion.
Weight: The fewer slats, the lighter the blind becomes when raised.
Tapes are an optional extra, so personal preference plays a role. Some people add them to change the look of the blinds, creating a shutter-like structure at a lower cost. Others use contrasting tape colours with the wood colour to achieve a completely different look for the blinds.
Daytime Privacy
Wood blinds can be tilted through 90 degrees, so they excel at providing daytime privacy.
Protect items against fading
With 90 degree of angle adjustment, your furniture will be protected from fading.
Glare from the sun
Just tilt the blinds to stop harsh glare.
Nightime Privacy
These can be fully closed for night.
Thermal Gain (Heat)
These are not the most effective at stopping heat.
Thermal Loss (Heat loss from inside your house)
These are not the most effective at reducing heat loss.
Blackout effect for bedrooms
Wood Venetian blinds offer a poor blackout effect. For a comprehensive understanding of your options for blackout blinds, visit our Blackout Blinds product page.
Most Standard Windows
With options to fit the top a window opening or to the frame, wood blinds can be installed in most windows with relative ease.
Sliding Doors/French Doors/Bi Folding Doors
These do not work well with doors.
Bay Windows
Wood Venetian blinds generally work well in any type of bay window.
We can provide a comprehensive repair service for any Wood or Faux Wood Venetian blind we have manufactured. The components used in these blinds are specific, so if you have a blind not manufactured by us, we may or may not be able to help.
All Wood and Faux Wood Venetian blinds are equipped with a child safety device called a Cord Condenser, which is situated at the top of the blind. It’s essential to have easy access to this device.
This device is designed to separate and disconnect the cords if enough weight is applied to it. The weight restriction is easily achievable based on the size of your window. Therefore, raising and lowering your blind isn’t just a matter of pulling on the traditional raise and lower cords.
In practical situations, pulling a heavy blind up can easily cause the Cord Condenser to separate. While it’s straightforward to put it back together, it’s not the most ideal solution. If your window is particularly tall and you can’t reach it, please keep this in mind.
